4 Kidnapped Chinese Freed As Police Arrest 11 Cultists In Calabar

Four Chinese nationals, kidnapped at gunpoint on July 21, 2020 at the premises of Danatrite Construction Company in Oban, Akamkpa local government area of Cross River state, during which a Police officer, Sgt. Ifere Sampson, lost his life, have been freed.

The State Police command disclosed that, together with other sister agencies, it secured the release of Kan Jinxi, Hujinchang, Jiang Jijun and Cheng Qing.

The Public Relations Officer of the state Police command, DSP Irene Ugbo, who made this known in Calabar, Sunday, said, “the Police and other security agencies, in collaboration with the State government, secured the release of the Chinese Nationals in Akpabuyo at about 1700 hours on Sunday. They are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.”

Reports in some quarters had indicated that N22 million was paid as ransom for their release but DSP Ugbo said she was not aware.

“I am not also aware of any payment of ransom for their release, and no arrest has been made yet,” she said.

In a similar vein, the Police said its operatives from the Special Anti Robbery Squad and officers from the Federal Housing Police Division of the Force arrested eleven suspected cultists on Saturday during initiation ceremony into a cult at Bishop Moynag Avenue, State Housing, Calabar.

In a press statement made available to Journalists on Sunday, the Police spokesman, DSP Ugbo, said, “On Aug. 14, 2020, a team of SARS operatives and men from the Federal Housing Police Division through an intelligence from the Commissioner of Police swung into action and arrested 11 suspected cultists during initiation.

“Items recovered from them include talking drum, wooden gung, two kegs of concoction and a bottle of Gordon drink. The suspects confessed to the crime. Investigation is still ongoing to unravel other cult members.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police once again warned all members of any cult groups or anyone having intention to engage in any cult related activities to desist from such”.
