Why Did Kano Receive 100% Tax Revenue While Lagos Received 20% Despite Generating N46bn?

Talks about how the Value Added Tax (VAT), generated from the 36 states in the country, is being shared by the Federal Government, has dominated news space in recent time.

Recall that the Rivers State Government had approached a federal high court in Port Harcourt, seeking to stop the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), a tax collection arm of the FG, from collecting VAT in the state.

In its ruling, the high court granted Rivers State the right to collect VAT Revenue, effectively dissolving the Federal Government's power to collect VAT in the state.

In reaction to the court ruling in Port Harcourt, the Lagos State Government quickly passed its own bill, seeking to control the collection of VAT in the state.

Many northern states have expressed displeasure at the move by the Rivers and Lagos State government to control VAT collection in their states.

However, Governor Nyesom Wike did not just approach a Federal high court without explaining his reason.

In a post shared on Social media, Wike claimed that Rivers State generated about N15.1bn as taxes in June; However, the state only received N4.7bn as revenue from the federal government, which is about 31% of the total revenue it generated.

Continuing, Wike stated that Lagos State received only N9.3bn despite generating over N46bn in June. That means, Lagos received less than 20% of the total money that was generated in the state.

Now, there may have been no complaint from the states if the deductions were across board. However, Wike reported that Kano State received N2.8bn from the federal government, despite generating only N2.8bn in June. This, is where the whole fracas originated from.

The question now is, why did Kano receive over 100% of the revenue it generated, while states like Rivers and Lagos that contributed more got about 31% and 20% respectively?

The answer to this question may explain why Rivers and Lagos Governments decided to take the bull by the horn and demand for total control of the revenue collection structure in their states.

Lagos, for example, generates considerable revenue because of its commercial nature and high goods inflow. Consequentially, it needs to allocate massive resources to the development of more infrastructures to maintain its development. How would the state do this if it continues to get only a paltry amount of the money it generated, while another state gets everything?

Indeed, the writer opines that a reformation is needed in the VAT sharing structure employed by the Federal Government.

It's quite unfortunate that people allow social media control how they think and act. Anybody who is wise will keep his private business off social media.

Chioma Ifeanyi-Eze shared:

WILL CUSTOMERS BE WILLING TO PAY MORE FOR EXCELLENCE?

Two days ago, I found out about a premium cleaning company that serves only very meticulous people.

The team are trained to raise objects, clean and return them exactly the same way they found them.

Their sense of arrangement and thorough-ness gets them paid up to 3 times higher than a normal cleaning service.

I started to think about it - So people are really happy to pay extra for excellence?

So if I add more care and thorough-ness in my work, the price can go up?

Let's try this - Please choose which you would prefer.

Mr A - charges 8000 Naira to service your generator. Extremely thorough. He doesn't splash oil on your walls. He cleans the generator and the whole area after working. He checks all the vital parts and writes you a note explaining the condition of the generator after working. He uses guaranteed original spares and signs off a warranty period on the note he gives you. He even stores the date for the next servicing and reminds you ahead.

Mr B - charges 5000 Naira to service your generator. He is our regular guy. Oil everywhere, leaves the place dirty after work. He comes when you call. He writes nothing - it isn't even important to him. He says nothing about the spares, he just buys and installs. He is 95percent of the guys we all know and use.

Imagine you need to service your generator every quarter and you had these two options, who would you choose? Who would you rather use?

Let's discuss in the comment section.

We like to test and see if people are really willing to pay more for excellence.

I love you!

So last night, I was at this Club around Wuse 2 axis.

While there, I noticed that when someone ordered for a drink, the lights gets dimmer, then some energetic waiters numbering about 10 ladies and guys, make some special procession-like movement holding beautiful LED-light Batons with the drink in a LED-light powered VIP Bottle glorifier (Bottle holder), as the DJ plays one Spanish or is it a Latino 'Dorime' àbí 'Torime' song like that (Clubbers may know this).

That song reminds me of the UEFA Champions League Anthem. Those whose Clubs have won the UCL will understand better.

Anyway, I digress 😁.

So, they play this 'Dorime' song and the feeling is awesgasmic.

I also noticed other people were ordering for drinks, but there was no specialty in the delivery of their orders, neither was the lights dimmed nor 'Dorime' played.
Just normal lighted drink holder with 3 tired ladies going to drop it for them at their tables.

But there were these set of guys that kept ordering the drinks that made the DJ always stop whatever music was playing, to play 'Dorime' as the waiters process to their table.

So curiously, amidst the loud sound of music, I drew closer and asked the waiter guy around me, "guy how far?, why are they playing that special 'Dorime' song for those guys, only when their drink is taken to them?"

Waiter smiled, leaned forward and said to me, "Sir, we only play it when people buy expensive Champagnes like Armand de Brignac (Ace of Spades)."

I asked him, "so how much is the Ace of Spades here?"

He whispered, "Sir, it's N500k for one Bottle."

I turned back, looked around me, switched to pidgin English, and said to him,
"you mean say 'Dorime' na N500k?"

He laughed and answered, "not the song Sir, but any expensive champagne bought, gets the song played"

I said to him, "and DJ don play that 'Dorime' like 7 times for those boys wey dey there?"

He laughed again and said, "Oga, I don't know when you entered here, but those guys been don dey order since."

I just smiled, said 'thank you' to him, sipped my Smirnoff Double Black, and left the Club earlier than I planned.

I refuse to bow to peer pressure.

Today, I will download that 'Dorime' song; then order a chilled La'Casera Drink for myself by myself at home; and as I open my fridge to serve myself, I will put off the light in my sitting room, light the candle and play 'Dorime.'

I can't shout jare.. 😳😳😳
