Governor Obiano Suspends Eke Awka Market Closure, Directs Its Opening From Monday,29th June 2020



Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has suspended the government’s earlier directive to close Eke Awka market for violating Anambra state Covid-19 law.

A statement on Friday, 26th June 2020 by the Secretary to the State government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu said; “Governor Willie Obiano has considered the various pleas by Eke Awka market traders and other stakeholders, and following assurances by the traders that going forward, they will strictly abide by, and enforce the state government’s Covid-19 law and other directives on stopping the spread of the virus in the state. Also, the traders have signed an undertaking with the state government in that regard hence His Excellency on compassionate grounds has directed that the directive to close Eke Awka market which came into effect on Monday, 15th June, 2020 be suspended”.

Professor Chukwulobelu said that Eke-Awka market will re-open for business on Monday, 29th June 2020 and this includes Eke Awka market and surrounding markets such as Oderah market, Uwakwe Ukaegbu market, Author Eze Avenue market and Ziks Avenue.

He urged all market leaders in the state to enforce the terms of the undertaking signed with the state government on Friday, 26th June, 2020 concerning observing and enforcing Covid-19 safety protocols in their various markets.

“We are entering a new phase of engagement with market leaders in the state whose support is critical to stopping the spread of Covid-19 in Anambra state. The market leaders now know that sanctions more stringent than the almost 2-weeks closure of Eke Awka market will apply if they fail to enforce Covid-19 safety protocols in their various markets including wearing of protective face masks, maintaining of social distancing in the markets, provision of buckets and water for washing of hands etc”, Professor Chukwulobelu concluded.

Meet Miss Maduafokwa Agnes Egoagwuagwu, the brilliant girl with highest 2020 JAMB score

Agnes attained the impressive feat of having the highest 2020 UTME score after she scored a whopping 365 out of 400.

President of the Maths Club and the 1st Assistant Head Girl of Louisville Girls High School Ijebu-Itele in Ogun State, Agnes says she wants to study Engineering, where she can apply mathematical concepts in solving societal challenges.

The lovely hails from Ihiala in Anambra State and wrote her UTME on March 14th 2020 in St Michael Otedola Education Centre in Epe, Lagos State.

She scored 72 in Use of English, 99 in Mathematics, 99 in Physics and 95 in Chemistry. She applied to study Industrial Production Engineering at the prestigious University of Ibadan, Oyo State

The United Nations (UN) says it has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a couple apparently having sex in one of its official cars in Israel.

Spokesman of the Secretary-General, Mr Stephane Dujarric, told UN correspondents in New York on Friday that the organisation was “shocked and deeply disturbed” by the footage.

Dujarric confirmed that the video featured a 4×4 vehicle, containing personnel “likely assigned to the UN Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO)”.

The short video shows a woman in a red dress straddling a man in the back seat of the white SUV bearing the “UN” inscription.

With them in the moving vehicle are the driver and a bald-head man sitting on the passenger side in front.

Media reports say the footage was recorded on HaYarkon Street, a major thoroughfare in Tel Aviv, the Israeli capital, although the UN said its authenticity had not been confirmed.

Dujarric said: “We are shocked and deeply disturbed by what is seen on the video.

“The behaviour seen in it is abhorrent and goes against everything that we stand for and have been working to achieve in terms of fighting misconduct by UN staff.

“We became aware of the video a little bit more than two days ago and our colleagues in the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) were immediately activated.

“Their investigation I know is moving very quickly. We know the location of the incident and the identification of individuals in the video, who are likely assigned to the UNTSO, is close to being completed.

“As part of the UN’s commitment to transparency, the UN will provide updates on the conclusion of the investigation and any further action.”

According to the organisation, UNTSO, headquartered in Jerusalem, is the first-ever peacekeeping mission established by the UN in 1948.

It says the mission comprises military observers to monitor ceasefires, supervise armistice agreements and prevent military escalation.

In a statement, UNTSO said it was committed to the UN’s zero-tolerance policy against any kind of misconduct, including sexual exploitation and abuse.

It reminded its personnel of their obligations to the UN Code of Conduct.

The BBC quoted Ms Heather Barr, Co-director of the women’s rights division of Human Rights Watch’s, as saying the video did not come to her as a surprise.

Barr, who according to the news outlet had worked for the UN in Burundi and Afghanistan, said the UN had a bigger problem than the Sex in UN official car video.

“That problem is about allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse committed by staff members of the UN,’’ she told the medium.

Recalls that the UN received and investigated 175 allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse against its staff in 2019.
