ON FUEL SUBSIDY...

As HR practitioners and driver of Businesses we cannot afford to take a back seat and fold our hands without proffering solutions to Senior Management and Executives, let’s be proactive.

Let’s not wait for that employee to slump in the office before making moves to ease this pressure and tension in the country.

Some initiatives you can introduce are:

👉🏽Remote or Hybrid work mode can be activated.

👉🏽Reduce work hours for early closure from work to enable staff get home on time.

👉🏽Introduce Rota-work system whereby some employees would have on and off-days.

👉🏽Employees can do car-pooling to save on cost of fueling.

👉🏽Organizations can sign agreement with Vehicle leasing companies to convey employees To and Fro their work places.

👉🏽Motivate employees by paying COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) or make provision for one-off payment on transportation allowance for 2 months.

Inflation rate has been estimated at 18.5% so calculate COLA at 18.5% of gross salary or work around a variable depending on organization purse.

👉🏽Increase or make provision for purchase of data to help improve seamless work from home.

👉🏽Organizations can withdraw cash systematically and help re-distribute to their employees through their bank’s relationship managers.

👉🏽Serve free lunch or pick 1-2 days a week to serve lunch in the office if you cannot afford 5 days.

👉🏽Introduce wellness programs and do physical exercise in the office once awhile.

👉🏽Admin officers or Facility Managers should liaise with their preferred (Vendor) Fuel Station they partnered with for their staff buses, so they can negotiate and purchase fuel to buy in gallons and re-distribute.

Never have we had it so bad; some people with salaries unable to access it in the banks, the accessible funds are being exorbitantly levied; unavailable and unaffordable fuel pump price has made a mockery of wages and salaries and the take-home pay cannot take people home again.

👉🏽While you are at it, have you started considering what Business Continuity Plan (BCP) you need to trigger going into the removal of fuel subsidy?

As HR practitioners, let’s start showing love and concern as the People’s Advocate.

Why Nigeria should care about Internet poverty

The internet is the single greatest invention of our time. In 2023, internet access is almost as essential as food, shelter or clothing.

Traditionally, the term ‘poor’ is not often conflated with internet connectivity. In fact, when the World Bank authored a 1990 World Development Report on ‘Poverty’, the word ‘internet’ did not appear in the 276-page report even once.

Lack of access to affordable, quality internet could lock an individual out of economic opportunities, trapping them further in a cycle of poverty.

So, as the internet becomes indispensable for staying connected and making a living, it’s important to define a benchmark for internet poverty.

But definitions are only the first step to solutions. This is why digital economy analysts, not only explains the definition of internet poverty but also analyses how Nigeria should tackle its 65 million internet-poor population.

Quite insightful. Indeed, the internet is the backbone of the 21st century economy; and any serious government would ensure that it creates the right infrastructure and framework to help that industry grow.
